Taking Networking to Another Level

Here’s a cool new web-based business tool you’d never have seen a few years ago. It’s called Upwardly Mobile– UpMo for short — and it’s like GPS for business networking. With the explosion of social media and all manner of new business networking opportunities, it’s more important than ever to be involved. But many professionals, business owners and others only get serious about networking when faced with a problem they need to solve.

The best biz networkers, however, consider it a lifestyle rather than fiscal triage. This is where UpMo comes in. It’s an on-demand service that guides your networking habit so you get the most out of it. As the UpMo folks point out, networking’s no longer optional. What’s more, much of what we believe about business networking is flat out wrong. For example, believing that simply having lots of LinkedIn and Facebook connections equates to success. “Not so”, says UpMo.

If Facebook and the like have you flummoxed and you could use a GPS-like guiding hand to navigate the increasingly complex world of professional networking, give UpMo a look-see. You can start with a free “State of Your Network” evaluation at the site to get a report on where you stand.

I wholeheartedly agree. Not enough people subscribe to professional networking as the most reliable means of career advancement and many of those who do simply embrace Metcalfe’s Law. LinkedIn is great for making and managing connections, but if you don’t have a clear destination and a visible path of least resistance, you’re just wasting your time. If UpMo can do what they say they can do, I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more about this site especially in these troubling times.

Sounds like a really useful tool – most career centers just tell you to network but don’t give you much advice on how to do it best. Showing up at a few events and shaking some hands isn’t going to cut it anymore.

  3. Thanks for spreading the word about UpMo.com! In this economy, it’s very easy to forget about our career goals. Our purpose is to help people stay on track, by applying the concept of GPS to their careers.

It’s all about looking at where you are today and figuring out the steps — based on research we’ve done on the career steps of successful professionals — to your destination.

Along with career planning, we believe that networking is linked to career advancement. Our study on networking, done in coooperation with Pepperdine University, reveals some of the habits of elite networkers. They are habits that anyone – extrovert or introvert – can apply.

The highlights of the study are in the blog post Tracking the Habits of Elite Networkers: http://www.upmo.com/blog/upmo-study-tracking-the-habits-of-elite-networkers#comments
